ELIJAH Leadership Journey for Experienced Leaders

“Elijah in the Desert Awakened by an Angel” by the German artist Moritz Berendt

The prophet Elijah is often regarded as a giant among the many prophets in the Old Testament and his faithfulness with God, his enduring leadership and mission during a turbulent time in Israel’s history is an inspiration for all of us who desire to be faithful and courageous when we are on mission for Christ.

As we navigate family and professional life, and Christian ministry, like Elijah, we gradually become aware of the challenges, uncertainty, disappointments and desolation we experience in our leadership.  We continue to strive to grow in faithfulness and commitment to prayer and the study of scripture, but something still seems to be missing. Have you ever wondered what else you need you to do?

The Elijah Leadership Journey is designed to help Catholic leaders grow in intimacy with God, in discernment of His will and in integration of their mental, emotional and spiritual areas of their lives. It provides them an opportunity to examine and strengthen the critical areas of their human and spiritual formation to sustain them in their leadership journey through the challenges they face with clarity and compassion.

CLC invites Catholic leaders who have served in ministries or apostolates for 10 years or more, and those who have already begun their interior journey and have a foundation in leadership, to join us in this leadership journey: A Day-of-Recollection followed by 4 courses over a 4 month-period.

The ELIJAH Journey outline:

  • Kick-off Day-of-Recollection: God’s gentle question to weary Prophet Elijah – “What are you doing here?” – is a divine invitation to step out of busyness, fatigue and discouragement and find comfort in God. This one-day retreat explores the triumphs and deserts of Elijah’s journey, guiding you to find peace and refreshment in the deserts of your own life.
  • Developing a Discerning Heart: Have you ever wondered if there are holistic ways to discern God’s will and develop a closer relationship with Him? Heart-centred discernment requires us to be alert to God’s divine influence in all areas in our lives so that we make prayerful choices that will support a transition from discouragement, doubt and disquiet towards greater faith, hope and love.
  • Leading in Spiritual Freedom: This module grounds us in our identity as God’s beloved and helps us to understand the disordered attachments that prevent us from embracing our beloved-ness in God. What is spiritual freedom and what are the obstacles to this freedom?  When we are firmly rooted in our identity in God, we can be free to lead according to God’s will.
  • Becoming a Self-Differentiated Leader: Our vulnerabilities often stand in the way of spiritual freedom. Many of our responses to our vulnerabilities can be understood in terms of life-traps, maladaptive patterns of thinking and behaving that can be traced to our childhood. Looking to Christ, we can let vulnerability become a springboard to becoming our True Self in order to be free to lead from a place of authenticity.
  • Discerned Group Decision-Making: Discernment is an inward journey to being attentive to and aligning one’s actions to God’s influence in one’s life. Participants learn to ways to engage the head, heart and listen to their lives and the Holy Spirit, as well as seek communal wisdom as they make decisions for their communities.
