“The Church will have to initiate everyone – priests, religious and laity – into this ‘art of accompaniment’ which teaches us to remove our sandals before the sacred ground of the other.”
Evangelii Gaudium, 169
Some of the different roles that companions may be called to include offering friendship, encouragement and emotional support to the other, offering a listening ear as the other processes the challenges and transitions he or she may be going through, inviting the other to grow in greater self-awareness and gratitude for his or her belovedness as a son or daughter of God.
In this two-part workshop for companions, you will experience a taster of what it means to be walked with and to walk alongside another within a mutually enriching relationship, each supporting the other to grow in faith and holiness together. You will discover models of accompaniment from Scripture. Learn the various stages to support the companion journey. Identify pitfalls that diminish your effectiveness as a companion and how to overcome them. Review case studies. Role play, share and learn from one another’s accompaniment experience, guided by the facilitator.
Why become companions:
- Answer the call to journey towards Jesus Christ with those whom God has entrusted to you, including the next generation of leaders.
- Share your experience of God’s presence in your life’s challenges, in solidarity with others going through their challenges now.
- Strengthen your own faith as you grow alongside those you support.
”The faithful must be sustained by the encouragement and assistance of the entire ecclesial community.”
Christifideles Laici, 16
