Introduction to Accompaniment (ACOM)

God, the foremost accompanier, continues to inspire the Church and walk with her even after the Ascension of his Son Jesus. Through the Holy Spirit, the charism of accompaniment has been present as a source of inspiration in the Church and can be carried out by all members of the faithful for the building up of the Church.

This course explores how accompaniment is essential in the faith journey and involves a purposeful direction in which one person accompanies the other towards growth in love of God, conformity to Christ, and attention to the work of the Holy Spirit.

In this one-day introductory workshop, participants will learn:

  • The meaning and purpose of accompaniment in the Christian tradition, drawing on insights from Pope Francis’ Evangelii Gaudium.
  • To evaluate personal experiences of being accompanied and accompanying others, using journaling and guided reflection to identify key attitudes, skills, and challenges.

The adoption and practice of accompaniment is regarded as one of the key Pastoral Priorities that emerged from the Archdiocesan Pastoral Assembly in 2025. This introductory module was developed by the Catholic Leadership Centre (CLC) in collaboration with the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council (APC) to support parishes, ministries, apostolates and communities in their journey of accompaniment among their members and others.
